@cdi you can’t apply for real ID yet… that have to wait until you get your green card. As for “not for federal purpose” , you can travel within the US just using that ID.

Waiting 4Ever ~ That's not true. I don't have my GC & I've had my Real ID for close to 3 yrs now.

@K P maybe it’s state specific… when I went, the DMV officer told me I needed a green card. And I’m from New York. Which state are you from?

Becareful w/some of those DMV clerks. I'm here in So. Fla as many immigrants as there are here, it's difficult to get a REAL ID. I had all of my paperwork & the clerk was STILL telling me I couldn't get a DL. I had to call over a manager who looked at my documents & told the clerk I had everything I needed to get my DL. Idk about now, but many undocumented ppl like a cousin of mine in NY drove to CT to get a DL. This was back in the day (early 2000's).

@ waiting 4ever… I got it and I’m from NY too. I got it when I got my 2 year marriage green card a few years back. I was told at first I couldn’t get it because I only had a 2 year green card and my hubby and I literally made the dmv clerk do it. They actually had to phone Albany to confirm and it was good to go and I got it for 5 years

All you need is your passport to travel inside the US.

Waiting 4Ever - every state has their own rules. I've held Real ID in 2 states without the green card: Florida and North Carolina. states like Washington don't have Real ID, but Enhanced ID. that one is only available for US citizens. cdi amg - "Not for federal propose" means that you can't present that ID to TSA and expect to board any plane domestically. you'll have to present your EAD or your passport for that. places that require you to show your ID for federal purpose, any other type of documentation with your picture and one with your address and name will work in pair. you can travel within the country with the ID that you currently have, but if you can get a Real ID where you are, then I would advise you to. it is going to become standard shortly, anyways. 🙂 edit: Real ID has been delayed until 2023 but here's a link that explains what documentation you need for travel within the US and what you need to show if you want to travel by plane 🙂: https://id2023wa.com
