Taxes question while waiting for approval
currently waiting for approval from UCIS. Spouse is abroad. How do I file? it is virtually impossible to get certified copies because of her living abroad. Do I file single until she is finally here?

Do the research about the e-file services like TurboTax. Then you both can electronically sign and it’s also free for you

Filing as single is not a good idea

You can file separately from your wife, but don’t lie that you are single

Sophie, it is saying she needs to have an ITIN number, which requires certified copies from issuing agency, which is virtually impossible.

@david Basom
same situation - my husband is USC and I’m overseas
if he files as married but separately - as I am a spouse of a USC - do I get taxed on my income in Europe? the us taxes USC & GC holders wherever they live in the world - and their families.
that’s a good question… I don’t want to have to pay double in terms of taxation

w7 form instructions say you could submit originals that will be returned to you within 60 days (or earlier if you need them)

I know, but the problem is that she is living in another country. How am I supposed to get an original??

Mail it?

@David Basom use Tax Act to efile since that tax software doesn’t require a SSN of ITIN for non resident tax exempt spouses. there’s a box you can check for non US resident
