Social Security Card
Hi, guys. I have a quick question about my social security card. *So, short story……I got my EAD about 25 days before I got my green card, and I got my social security card about a few weeks after I got my green card. On the social security card it says
“Valid for work only with DHS authorization.”
I called the SSA to ask if I could replace it with a normal one, but the lady who works at the SSA said “It’s the same as the normal one. You can use it to work. There’s no need to change or replace it.”
I do know that it’s supposed to say that when I only have the EAD, but in this case I have the green card already.
I just thought that they wouldn’t have put it there if there’s no conditions.
The question is “Does anybody know ‘the conditions’ or ‘the effects’ between the card with and without the phrase?”

once u become a permanent resident you can remove the condition on ur ssn. call and make an appointment to get it replaced. it’s not really a big deal but it does affect somethings.

yeah just like JJ said, I have my appointment on December 2nd to remove conditions on my ssn so just call them and make an appointment

you would have to apply using a form to remove the condition on the ssn card

the ss person told me before once I got my green card I need to update my ss status where they give me another ss card without stamp.

@jj now Do you know what it effects? I can’t find the conditions.

I went to ss with my ss card with stamp. 5 days later they send me my new sscard without stamp.

if you apply for loan or mortgage or even a credit union acc they will ask to see the card and when they see (work only ) it doesn’t sit well with them. so just make an appointment and fill the forms out then it takes 2 weeks after to get it back without those words.

it's not a big deal just wait till you renew your green card and you could apply to remove the condition on the ssn too..

@E lgh Mine is a 10 year green card though.

You got nothing to worry about,,you can apply for a replacement ss card and it will be as you want to be...Their system will reflect you a green card holder..

One simple example of what it might affect:
I tried to create an account with an energy company in the county I live in Georgia and they only allowed me to have a pre paid account due to that marking on my SSN

The problem is that I tried to apply, but they told my not to worry about it and not applying for a replacement card. I don’t know if they don’t want me to go in or what, I’m not sure. The SSA in my area only open for an appointment only. I tried to make an appointment, but they said I don’t need to worry about it. 😞😞
