Seeking Insight on international travel on advanced parole to a country on the list countries where immigrant visa issuance has been paused.
I currently have a pending I-485 (Adjustment of Status) application, along with an approved EAD and Advance Parole travel document. I have an urgent need to travel to my home country, Ghana 🇬đź‡.
However, I’m concerned that I may experience challenges upon my return at a US port of entry because Ghana is among the 75 countries where the U.S. Department of State has paused the issuance of immigrant visas since January 21, 2026.
Is there anyone here (or do you know anyone) from any of these affected countries who has traveled internationally using Advance Parole since this pause took effect? I would greatly appreciate it if you could share your experience or any insights.
Thank you in advance.

@Andy Gee Don’t do it, bruh. These are strange times and you’re barely here. Especially if you were a visa overstay.

@Andy Gee This is an important and nuanced question.
Advance Parole (AP) is issued by USCIS and allows an I-485 applicant to seek re-entry into the U.S. without needing a visa from a U.S. consulate. The Department of State’s pause on immigrant visa issuance applies to consular processing abroad, not directly to adjustment of status applicants inside the U.S.
That said, entry with Advance Parole is always discretionary at the port of entry. Even with a valid AP document, CBP has the authority to inspect and determine admissibility.
If your I-485 remains pending, your Advance Parole is valid, and you do not have issues such as unlawful presence bars, prior removal orders, criminal history, or unresolved inadmissibility concerns, historically many applicants have been able to travel and return without issue.
However, given the current policy climate and the fact that Ghana is on the list of countries affected by the immigrant visa pause, I would strongly recommend consulting with an experienced immigration attorney before traveling. Even if the legal frameworks are technically separate, enforcement posture and discretionary review at ports of entry can evolve.
In short:
• The visa pause applies to consular immigrant visa issuance.
• Advance Parole is a USCIS benefit tied to your pending I-485.
• Re-entry is still discretionary.
• Individual facts matter significantly.
This is not necessarily a “do not travel” situation, but it is definitely a “travel only after professional review” situation.
Wishing you clarity and a safe outcome.

@Andy Gee Good morning yes I'm the one just came back 3 weeks ago from Africa with advance parole without any issue I spent 3 week and some days over there and before I left police arrest me gave me ticket twice due to my street job and I went to court and the judge dismissed the case before I left so you don't need anything to worry about once you have you parole is still valid and don't spent too much time outside..if you still have any questions I'm here to answer.

@desmond desmond, thanks for the feedback. I have a few followup questions.
The pause took effect on January 21, 2026. Did you return before or after Jan 21, 2026? Also, how long were you away for? What airport did you come through and did you go through secondary inspection?
Thank you in advance!

it is safe not to travel for now. We all know these are unpredictable times. My lawyer STRONGLY advised me against that.

I understand why you’re worried, especially with the headlines around visa pauses. The key distinction here is that the State Department’s pause on immigrant visa issuance abroad affects consular processing, not adjustment of status cases inside the U.S. You have a pending I-485 and a valid Advance Parole document, which is issued by USCIS, not the consulate. Entry on Advance Parole is handled by CBP at the port of entry, and it is not the same as applying for an immigrant visa abroad. So the pause on immigrant visa issuance for Ghana does not automatically block you from returning on AP.
That said, reentry is always discretionary, and you should travel with your AP document, EAD, I-485 receipt, and proof of ongoing U.S. ties like employment. Expect possible secondary inspection, which is common and not necessarily a red flag. As long as your AP is valid and your case is still pending, nationality alone should not bar reentry under current policy.
