Do not register to vote
Hello, I am posting this here because many have or are in the process of obtaining a green card.
I currently work at my county's registrar of voters and daily encounter green card holders in the process of applying for citizenship who have unknowingly register to vote. During their USCIS citizenship interview, they are not given a decision until they obtain a copy of their voting records.
Many have unknowingly registered at the DMV or on paper with the help of a circulator (person collecting registration forms , earning money for each form collected). Sadly, the registration forms have a statement that says they are claiming to be a US citizen. We all know clamming US citizenship could be a problem.
Bottom line, I advise you to specifically tell the DMV you do not want to register to vote.
Also, do not fill out any petitions or registration forms (normally outside of malls or stores) even if the circulation claims you can register and vote on local elections.
before you start your N400 or citizenship process, call or visit your local registrar of voters to look up your records and ensure you are not registered.
If you are registered, asked to be removed or canceled.
