Petitioning for my Yemeni mother (Part 2)
Sharing my experience to petition for my mother to immigrate in the US. This is post 2 of 4 describing the steps we took. Phase 1 was filing I-130 with the USCIS (Previous post) Phase 2 was submitting DS-260 via the CEAC website. Timeline: - October 9, 2020: NVC sent us an email of the approval for the I-130 and gave us a NVC Case Number and Invoice ID to login to the CEAC website to begin the Immigration Visa Application (DS-260) - October 10, 2020: Paid Fees on NVC Website - February 25, 2021: Submitted DS-260 and and some of the Civil Documents - January 2, 2022: Submitted some civil documents (It took us a while to gather civil documents, more on that below) - April 2, 2022: Email from NVC to update some of the civil documents (birth certificate + death certificate). - July 6, 2022: Email from NVC to replace death certificate for the second time. - Aug 24, 2022: Submitted updated death certificate - October 19, 2022: Documentary Qualified 🎊 Evidence Submitted: - Police Certificates (Countries of residence) - Petitioner's Marriage Certificate - Petitioner's Birth Certificate - Photographs for my mother - Passport Biographic Page for my mother - Birth Certificate for my mother - Death/Burial Certificate for my father For the financial evidence, I had enough income to cover the minimum requirement and w-2 so this is what I submitted in Feb 2021 (Keep in mind that these were later updated) - Form I-864Ez Affidavit Of Support - 2019 Federal Income Tax Return or Transcript - 2018 Federal Income Tax Return or Transcript - 2017 Federal Income Tax Return or Transcript - 2019 Form W-2 Wage And Tax Statement Biggest hurdles: My mother lived in four countries and we were under the impression for the longest time that we needed to provide police certificates for all the countries she lived at. We later confirmed that you only need to get the police certificate for the country of current residence. We also had to obtain a replacement for the birth certificate from Yemen but because neither of us were in Yemen, so it took a while to coordinate someone who can obtain this document for us. In summary, we submitted our full documents in August 2022 and became documentarily qualified in under three months Alhamdulilah. The third post will cover our process after getting documentary qualified and helpful resources for the upcoming stage. Hope this helps! #Yemen #Egypt #Djibouti #DS260 #IR5 #MotherGreenCard

thank you so much for the information. do you need to submit police certificates to nvc or those need to be taken to the embassy when interview is scheduled?

We did both. We uploaded the first police certificate to the NVC and because the interview was scheduled after a year from uploading it, we issued a new one and uploaded it online before the interview. Then we took the original ones to the interview. They will only ask for the newest one.

Thanks for your posting your experience! I have a question. My wife will be traveling to Djibouti from Egypt. She is a Yemeni citizen. Will she need a police certificate from Yemen? We don’t know how to get one since going to Yemen for it is hard

Short Answer: It depends on how long she's been in Egypt. If she lives in Egypt then most likely she doesn't need it. Long Answer (our experience): My mother has been in Egypt for the past ten years and we originally only submitted the Police Certificate from Egypt. There was a requirement under the civil documents to also submit for Yemen but we just left a comment saying that she doesn't live in Yemen (and this was accepted) When we arrived Djibouti, we had an immigration service center review her documents and the guy told us we need a Yemeni Police Certificate so we issued one from the Yemeni Embassy in Djibouti (its a super quick process). We uploaded the Police Certificate for Yemen online and brought the original one to the embassy but they said it's not needed and didn't take it :)

@Ali B that being said, take a look at the instructions here:https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/immigrate/the-immigrant-visa-process/step-5-collect-financial-evidence-and-other-supporting-documents/step-7-collect-civil-documents.html Depending on your wife's situation and what you submitted for the online civil documents, If she needs to get the police certificates, you can issue it at the Yemeni Embassy in Djibouti within the same day
