N400 question
This is reg optional name change (under part 2) on N400 form —the question asks for my legal name. So for this form, will it be my maiden or marital last name? I’m confused because I recently changed my last name on my own country’s passport and US Ssn card. But green card has maiden name. On i751 I put marital name under my name. Becuase I thought that’s my rightful name. but N400 asks for marriage certificate with marital as proof to consider that valid
I’m confused as to What is considered legal name change? should be the passport since I’m still foreign citizen, but also could be the N400 form since they’ll be printing US passport

your name must match with Name on Green card. later they will give you an option to change your legal name. at that point you can add your updated name and as an evidence you can share your home country passport along woth SSN.

the name on your marriage certificate would suffice if you would like to stick to your new last name, the officer assigned during your n400 interview will let you know a name change request isn’t required since your marriage certificate has the new last name. long story short- your new last name is fine in the application

@Dorcas A
marriage certificate has my maiden name since while filling we weren’t officially married yet. but I read in many forums online that’s common to have maiden name on it and still be able to use husbands name as new legal name without any extra step.

@marriage-gc I-751 ohhhh if that is the case you will have to use the name on your official US document and you can ask for a name change during your n400 interview
