You do not need an approval letter; however, you do need the receipt notice of Form I-130 in order to submit Forms I-485, I-765, and I-131. If your spouse is a green card holder, then you cannot submit Form I-485 until your priority date is current (filing date). Here is the instruction for Form I-485: If an immigrant visa is immediately available, you may file your Form I-485 together with your Form I-130, while Form I-130 is pending, or after your Form I-130 is approved. And honestly, if your lawyer does not know this, you may want to reconsider whether they are the right person to handle your case.
