The priority date is basically the date your green card process officially starts (if you already have a green card, then you’re done, this wouldn’t apply to you). USCIS and the State Department use that date to figure out when it’s your turn to move forward in the process. Let’s say someone files a petition (Form I-130) for their brother or sister. If USCIS receives that petition on March 15, 2021, then that becomes the priority date. From there, the person has to wait until the government is ready to process cases with that date, which you can check in the monthly visa bulletin. For example, the current final action date (the date when you're eligible to receive your green card) for the F4 category (siblings of U.S. citizens) is August 1, 2007. So in the example above, you’d need to wait until the final action date moves forward to March 15, 2021. This date is super important because there are limits on how many green cards are given out each year in certain categories. If you're in one of those, you might have to wait a long time and your priority date is what tells you when it’s finally your turn. I hope this helps!
