I-751
Hi all! I wanted to ask a few questions because I’m confused. My ID expires in October 2023 and I have to update it after I apply for the form I-751. What paperwork do I need to bring with me so I can update my ID? I called the motor vehicle department and they told me that after I apply for the form I-751, I have to go and update my SSN first and then bring the updated SSN, my marriage license and my passport to be able to get a new ID. Does that sound correct? Has anyone gone through the same process? Why do I have to update my SSN first? Is the paperwork they asked me to bring with correct?Thank you!

Hi there! I think I had somewhat the same situation some time ago. after I sent my i751 I had to go to update my ID as well but the lady when going through my paperwork at DMV told me I have restrictions on my SSN.
I didn’t know what it meant but went to ssn office after, they have told me that I DID have restrictions and issued me the new card in a week or so. On my old ssn card it was said “not valid without DHS work permit” something like that as I remember. After receiving my new ssn card I went to DMV again I brought my passport, green card, my extension letter, water bill, credit card and a bank statement. And they were able to give me the ID card.

thank you! that’s very helpful. were you able to update your ID before the old one expired? how long did it take them to send you a new SSN card? what is an extension letter and how do you get it?

All that my husband had to do here in Michigan was bring his 48 month extension letter he received after applying for I-751 and his drivers license that was expecting to get a new drivers license like two weeks ago. He still hasn’t updated his SSN lol.
