It all depends on the position.... I first applied for my current government job with my 2 yr green card. All background paperwork I filled out had no indication that US citizenship was a requirement. They just asked me to prove I was able to work in the USA, which I did by providing green card, DL & SSN card. However, other positions within my department require Citizenship.

thank you so much for your answer! the job is in public health sector,my spouse have seen that there is a new local health clinic so he adviced me to check if they are hiring, i searched them up and apparently its a government department... spouse told me to just apply and see what happens.. so i did send an application they did not write anything regarding US citizenship but now im just overthinking and im afraid this would be illegal or something.. ur thoughts? should i just call them and ask ? im afraid me applying itself was illegal lol

I also thought the same thing! I was super nervous to even show up to the interview & potentially waste their time. But now that I have worked there for almost 2 years, I know what departments and positions require citizenship & its also on our website. You could call ahead of time and ask, if it will make you feel more comfortable. But again, as long as you never lie on the paperwork, there is no wrongdoing. Ensure you read everything carefully & dont claim to be a US citizen, if you are not one.

oh god thanks a lot again for ur response because my anxiety was killing me! yes I am aware I should never claim to be a u.s citizen thats why i was stressed out because on google it just shows that governments jobs are mostly for U.S citizens and i was afraid that me sending an application is the same as claiming to be one..lol.. i will call them on monday and in case i wasnt permitted to work I'll ask them to withdraw/ignore my application..hopefully this wont cause any problems
