Do I need both EAD and SSN before getting a job?
Hi guys, I applied for EAD and SSN at the same time Feb 10 2021, and I got my EAD 3 weeks ago. SSN never arrived. I called SSA and the closest appointment will be next 2-4 months. I live in Houston and called several places already.
My question is: can I get a job with my EAD and then add my SSN later? 2-4 months is a long time for someone who has financial issues like me 🥲
Thanks!

it’s up to whatever employer to be honest.. & how they’d go about paying you & taxes.

my understanding is you can start work with the EAD but can’t get paid until you have SSN

The rule is 90 days - you can start work but must provide to employer within 90 days, this is what I have read and also this question has been answered a few times on here and that was what people were saying.

As an employer, if someone has a work permit and is waiting for a SSN there is a box on the W2 where you can put ‘applied for’ Ask your employer

@alan Nyugen, you need both but you can apply with EAD but you need to provide your ssn with certain days and if the employer will allow you.

my friend applied just with EAD and she just provide her ssn within that month she hired. if you don’t know when you will get your ss number better to wait for it before you apply for a job.

make an appointment with the SSN office, set that in stone so your employer knows when to expect ut.

@Alan... Another option is you called them again and ask them if they can provide you a SSN on the phone -some officers might do it- just to work with it before the card comes. It works for me because I was in a rush and the officer was so kind. he just provided me with a number, told me as from that day, the nber belongs to me, I can used it and that I should come with my ID and EAD at the end of the month for verification. Luckily my SSN card came before the end of the month with the same number the officer provided to me. So it really depends on the officer and the job you are about to lose.
