closed asylum
Hey everyone, I have a question about my case and I’m a bit confused about what’s happening next. My SIJ case was approved, but I also had a pending asylum application. Recently, I got an update saying that my application was closed and forwarded to the immigration court for adjudication. Does anyone know what this means in my situation? Is this normal after SIJ approval? What should I expect next in the process? I’d really appreciate if anyone who’s been through something similar can share their experience. Thanks!

I know that kind of update can feel confusing, but in your situation it is generally normal and procedural, not a problem. What likely happened is about jurisdiction. If you have (or had) any connection to immigration court, USCIS cannot continue handling the asylum application. So they close it on their side and forward it to the immigration court. With SIJ approved, your main path is usually through adjustment of status (I-485), not asylum. The asylum case often just remains in the background procedurally. So this update usually means: - USCIS is no longer handling the asylum case - The immigration court now has authority over that part - What to expect next depends on whether you are in proceedings: If you are, your case will continue before the immigration judge You may later pursue termination of proceedings or adjustment of status through the court The important part is: Your SIJ approval is not affected This does not mean a denial or setback If possible, it’s worth confirming your current court status and coordinating next steps carefully, since once a case is with the court, the process is a bit different. You’re still on the right track, this is just about which agency is handling your case now. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask them in our next Lawfully office hours session!
