You can qualify under VAWA if you experienced emotional abuse where your partner insulted you, humiliated you, manipulated your feelings, isolated you, punished you with silence, or made you believe everything was your fault, or psychological abuse where they played mind games, threatened to leave you helpless, monitored your movements, destroyed your confidence, or made you fear consequences for speaking up, or financial abuse where they controlled your access to money, blocked you from working, stole your wages, forced you to depend on them, threatened to cut off support, or used money as a weapon, or immigration abuse where they used your status against you, threatened to withdraw your paperwork, refused to file papers unless you obeyed them, told you that you would be deported if you didn’t comply, or used your green card process as leverage, or verbal abuse where they yelled, cursed, belittled, or degraded you constantly, or digital abuse where they tracked your phone, demanded passwords, stalked your messages, or used technology to intimidate you, or coercive control where they treated you like property, dictated what you could do or where you could go, or punished you emotionally if you didn’t follow their rules, or physical abuse which can be anything from pushing or grabbing to hitting or restraining or destroying your belongings, or sexual abuse where they forced or pressured you into intimacy without consent, all of these being recognized by VAWA as real harm that can break a person from the inside out and qualify you to self petition without your spouse ever being involved again.
