after I submitted an inquiry last month about my case being outside of normal process, I got this email today!
A check of our records establishes that the processing of your Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, is delayed pending receipt of your A-file. The USCIS National Records Center (NRC) remains operational while adhering to local health protocols. USCIS also utilizes the Federal Records Centers (FRC) operated by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) to house immigration records. NARA has different health and safety protocols to adequately protect their workforce. USCIS is continually working with NARA leadership on obtaining files stored with their FRC facilities to mitigate the current file request backlog.

My gut is that they are waiting for the original greencard alien file from some kind of center and it's taking a while.

I’m wondering some people are getting their citizenship in less than 4 months and some people have their files stucked somewhere for years and no one’s know when they going to look at it.

Can you please explain what you asked for exactly in the FOIA?

This question was specifically for @Simome. I wanted to know the date he filed FOIA and what date he got interview letter, since he recently mentioned that he got interview letter within a month after he filed FOIA.

Visit https://first.uscis.gov and file a request to get your "Alien File" since you were told that it is delayed because of that. That's what I've done... fingers crossed!

I submitted foia and completed below steps to get my primary A file. Since USCIS was unable to schedule my interview since they were waiting for my primary A documents. https://www.uscis.gov/records/request-records-through-the-freedom-of-information-act-or-privacy-act

hello everyone and sorry for the late reply! I submitted my application for nationalization online 15/05/2020, biometrics 12/05/2021. since then and till the last two months I have tried everything out of normal process requests, called my state governor... the answer was the same! your application process is delayed because of COVID bla bla bla then 3 months ago I submitted a FOIA and after my FOIA completed my case moved from actively reviewed to interview was scheduled.

Never submit a FOIA on a pending case unless you really need an exact copy of the form you previously submitted. This is what FOIA does: 1. It put a hold on your under-processing case 2. The local office who has the jurisdiction over your case woulld send your case to the nearest National Records Center so that they can respond to your FOIA request (takes normally 30 days) 3. It takes at least 60 more days for the Records Center to send your case back to where it was before after they fulfilled the FOIA request. Your case will be on hold as long as it is in the records center and no more processing will be done on it until it goes back to where it was before. Normally, the records center doesn’t transfer your case back to the main office until you send USCIS a letter in writing asking for it. This was what happened to my/my wife’s I-485 cases after we mistakenly submitted a FOIA request regarding our cases assuming that will speed up the procedure. It just added 3 more months to the whole procedure.
