751 approved but not sure what to do
Didn't expect it to become complicated...
So we filed i-751 jointly about 2 years ago, then thing went wrong at the end of last year and we eventually decided to get a divorce
Just started the divorce process early Feb 2026 and I was still processing as well as looking for/researching what should I do with my pending I-751, like should I tell them when the divorce got finalized etc
Then suddenly got approved without RFE or interview a few days ago...
Tried to search a lot on the internet and the community but still not sure what to do...like should I contact them and notify about the divorce proceedings or if I do nothing will this become a problem when I file N-400?
Would appreciate if anyone with similar experience to share, thanks a lot!

pay at most $200 and see an immigration lawyer. Do not rely on any advice order than an immigration lawyer's.

@Jackson U thank you. I think I’ll do as you suggested…

you are fine just have to file citizenship in 5 years since yall divorce.

@Carol C Technically, your divorce wasn’t finalized at the time your case was approved. Then again, it was already filed so not informing them definitely cut off a line of inquiry. Like earlier advised, talk to an experienced immigration lawyer who might’ve worked on this kind of case before.
I see people advising you to file for N-400 on the 5 year rule, you can but bear in mind that you will need to list when your marriage ended when filing the N-400 and things might unravel then. Better to clean this up now than later! All the best!

@Carol C You’ll be find this happened to my friend and he is very much ok thats 1 less problem for you. He’ll file n-400 in 5 years as his lawyer told him. Things actually worked out in your favor with this 1 because now u no longer need to worry about removing the condition with/without his help. its a miracle in disguise.

Congrats on your approval. sorry to hear about your divorce. You are fine but you’ll now need to naturalize based on the 5-year rule. 👍

It depends. You can submit the N-400 by law. You're entitled to it for the three years if you haven't divorced. It doesn't matter if you have a divorce pending; if you don't sign the divorce papers and three years pass, you can still submit the N-400. Just try to have evidence that shows you resided with your spouse for the full three years. Since your permanent residency has been approved, your spouse doesn't need to attend the combined interview since you're approved. Good luck!
