it just means, you have to have a work visa or EAD to work. Generally when providing I9 verification you could just show your SSN card and get through. When you have Green card or Citizenship you get what is called as “unconditional” or “unrestricted “ SSN which can be used as a proof. What you now got is a “restricted” or “conditional” SSN card.

@LJ, your current SSN is good for all purposes where SSN can be used, so go ahead and apply for Credit card and Driver’s License whichever you were planning to. Howevet as others mentioned, when you work you need to present other authorizations like EAD or visa.

@roger the SSN card becomes unrestricted when you become a permanent residence whether 2yrs or 10yrs green card. you just have to go update it at the social security office each time your status changes!!

@god’s child you can use your social for anything a US citizen can use his or hers for. you can also own a mortgage too if you want as long as you have your AOS in process!

@roger immigrant are required to update their SSN card each time their status changes. one don’t need to wait until “naturalization” it is compulsory so the social security administration can have update immigrant information. then you won’t even have to provide your “green card” to job sometimes ones it’s updated.
