when case is approved how soon can you schedule interview for 129-F

I keep reading in random places that people say don't wait for the NVC letter and to just request the # by emailing them and then fill out the ds-160/schedule interview. That's its faster that way... has anyone tried it here and it actually worked? am I missing any steps just trying to get it ahead of it in anyway possible! thanks 🙂
