VAWA approval 🎉
Hi everyone,
I just wanted to take a moment to share my journey with you. When I first started my VAWA process, reading posts here helped me so much, and I hope I can offer a little hope today in return.
I filed my VAWA application in November 2021. I had my biometrics appointment in April 2022, and then… silence. For almost three years, I didn’t hear anything. It was so hard sometimes to keep faith, to not feel forgotten or left behind.
In January 2025, I finally got an update: they had sent me an RFE (Request for Evidence). But the letter got lost. Neither I nor my attorney ever received the original notice. It took nearly three more stressful months to get a copy. All that time, I didn’t even know what evidence they needed or how much time I had to respond — I just knew that the clock was ticking.
At the end of March 2025, we finally got the copy. They asked for additional evidence about my good moral character and proof that my marriage was entered into in good faith. The deadline was only a few days away — April 7th — so my attorney and I rushed to gather everything we could.
We submitted it just in time. And yesterday… I finally received the news:
My VAWA was APPROVED.
I will also be getting my work permit soon, and I’m now eligible to apply for my green card.
I just want to tell anyone who is still in the waiting season:
Please don’t give up. I know it can feel endless. I know how painful the waiting, the silence, and the uncertainty can be. But God sees every tear, every effort, every moment of courage. Justice may take time, but it does come. Keep your head up. Keep fighting for yourself. You are not alone. Your story matters.
Sending love and strength to all of you on this journey 🫶🏼✨

@a d
1. Good moral character
-Letters from friends and neighbors testifying to my good moral character.
-Live Scan fingerprinting submitted to the FBI, and the FBI sent back a report (within 24 hours) confirming that I had no criminal record.
- A personal letter from me describing my daily life, what I like to do, and providing an overall picture of myself as a stable person surrounded by a community.
(Note: For this part, it can be helpful to include letters from people in your community, such as friends, neighbors, or even someone from a church, showing that you are not isolated and that you have positive relationships.)
2. Good Faith Marriage:
-Additional photos of me and my husband, and also photos with friends showing we shared a life together.
- Letters from friends who personally knew us as a married couple.
- A picture of a physical debit card that had both my name and my husband’s name on it. (My attorney explained that although I didn’t have online access to the account, the physical card with both names was proof.)
- A screenshot of text messages between me and my husband, such as casual conversations showing everyday life together (e.g., me texting him about going to the grocery store).
- A letter from our roommate confirming that we both lived there together, and explaining that the lease and utilities were under her name, which is why our names did not appear on those bills.

thanks for sharing. all this time you didn’t have work permit? didn’t you submitted at once form 485, and 765 for work permit?
😎 ❤️Apr 28, 2025
@Rebecca A when did u get prima facie???
Rebecca AApr 28, 2025
@G R No, during all that time I didn’t have a work permit. What happened is that my attorney filed my VAWA (Form I-360) together with my work permit application (Form I-765). However, I wasn’t eligible to file for adjustment of status (Form I-485) yet, because if I remember correctly, I had overstayed my previous visa and had unlawful presence. So my attorney said I couldn’t file the I-485 at that time.
Since I didn’t have adjustment of status pending, my work permit request was based on deferred action (I think that falls under category C14). But in VAWA cases, unless you already have deferred action granted, you usually have to wait until VAWA is approved before you can actually get a work permit.
So that’s why I only got my work permit at the same time as my VAWA approval.
(I’m not an attorney, but that’s how I understood it.)

@ustaad G I received my first Prima Facie in January 2022, and after that, I got a new one every six months.

@Rebecca A got it, thanks for clarifying. my case is similar to yours, although my attorney advised me to include 485 concomitently.

@G R Thanks for sharing. That’s great for you, you’ll probably save some time. Personally, I wasn’t given that option by my attorney, but I wish I had known. For me, the VAWA process felt like the most complicated and difficult part, and now that it’s approved, I think I’ll handle the Adjustment of Status on my own.

Rebecca AApr 28, 2025
@🙏🙏🙏🙏 ❤️ Yes, I did send evidence with my initial VAWA application in 2021. I included joint bank account statements, a roommate agreement with both of our names, a testimony letter from a friend, our marriage certificate, and many pictures — pictures from our wedding, pictures with friends, celebrating Christmas and Thanksgiving together, and also pictures from our day-to-day life.
But apparently, this was still not enough for USCIS. So when I received the RFE, I had to submit even more documents (as I mentioned in my previous comment).

@Rebecca A Congrats. How did you and your lawyer request for the extra copy of the RFE that was lost. And why do you think it took USCIS 2months to finally send another copy. Thanks
