I traveled a few times. Had no issues. Just make sure you bring your expired GC as well as the extension.

Mine has been pending 20 months now. So the extension was also expired. I had to get the I551 stamp in my passport. That was enough to travel, even without the expired green card and receipt at hand.

they won't let me get the i551 until 30 days before my 18 month extension expires
