hey @russ k you can get it. they do check your travel document before boarding your flight to spain. it's a gamble, when I traveled from one country to another they just saw my Getmany stamp and that I was good, so it's up to you and fingers crossed on your way out of spain.
I even had community members share the fact of flying from US directly to Spain with travel doc. not sure how that is possible but yeah.
I've shared the airline tool for visa checks in my group if you're interested, feel free to join: https://www.skool.com/uscis

@Immigration Guy I actually just had a trip to Europe. i entered in Netherlands, took train to Brussell and came back to US with the flight that had stop in Spain. in spain it seems like it was local terminal and not for international flight , which means i could easily left airport and go outside. But to board to my flight to us i went to anothet terminal and local custom stampped my passport. My freinds are traveling to Spain for new year and i had my appointment to spain embassy for schengen visa however from their website it says it can take up to 15 days to get a result. so im thinking if i even need a visa if I enter from another schengen country

that's the tricky part of the travel doc. people don't really know it so it's a gamble. i think your chances are high of you being able to go to spain if you enter in say Italy or any other country that allows the travel doc. do not buy a flight with the end destination in Spain. buy 2 separate flights.
if they make a fuss of it rent a car and drive there I guess?! everytime I travel it's taking a good hour of explaining that I do not need a visa lol even for the countries that I really do not need one . @russ k

My husband traveled to Netherlands in October, his final destination was Spain but Immigration officer ask him for the hotel reservation in Netherlands which he did not have it . My recommendation to you try to stay at least one day or have a reservation for at least a day and then fly to anywhere in Europe . My husband had to call the person in Spain so they talk to the IO to let him in the country .

once you enter the Schengen and your travel document stamp you fly locally no need to do immigrantion again in Spain .

just because you can doesn’t mean you should. I know visiting Germany, the Netherlands etc is allowed with RTD only. Though Spain requires a visa and so do some countries. Best advice is to get Schengen visa but at the end of the day it’s your decision! Congrats on your RTD and enjoy!
