Travel before One Year
Traveling out of US with Refugees Travel Document before one year completion of asylum granted may affect my i-485? Anyone has any idea or experience?
I submitted i-485 at 9th month of grant asylum and about to travel another country.
Thanks

you can’t travel with a refugee travel document, while you’re I-485 is pending unless you have an advanced parole, which is only valid for a month or 30 days. if you do travel it would be like giving up on the application, I believe not 100 sure, please look into this carefully.
dpeao dapiSep 24, 2024
but you can travel before you apply for I-485 then come back then apply.

when was your asylum granted,

@DS T it's doesn't apply on asylum base green card. i had made appointment for Advance perole but uscis officer told me i don't need Advance perole since i have travel document.

@DS T trying to help you out big guy, that’s what I was told by the tier 2 before sometimes they mistake as well, traveling with a refugee document it’s a complicated process itself, I did it last year and transit airports were struggling to put it in their system, also not every country accepts travel documents. look into this carefully and you might consider asking chat gpt for a more accurate answer.

DS TSep 24, 2024
@dpeao dapi thanks brother, but relevant and fact information needs to be given, it can mislead people who see such posts and comments for their cases. anyways thanks for taking time out to help. 🙏

@DS T i think its better if you go international flight after you submit your i-485 application. just wait till coming feb 2025 as you will be physically present in us for a year after your asylum wa sgranted.
gabriel gSep 24, 2024
so your RTD approved that quick?
DS TSep 24, 2024

I’ve used my RTD 5 times before I got my I-485 approved. I’ve never had any problems entering the US even if my I-485 was still pending. 2 out of the 5 times I was sent to secondary inspection so they could stamp the RTD with the right stamp and gave me a I-94 saying that I was admitted as an asylee. Hope this helps. Also, check if you need a visa to go to those countries. I went to Mexico twice and they let me in without asking me for a visa. Same thing when I went to Canada and Spain. Good luck!
Immigration GuySep 25, 2024
@Juan Romero you entered Canada with just RTD or when you got the Greencard? how about Spain? was that direct flight from US with just the RTD as spain normally asks for a visa for RTD holders ?
DS TSep 25, 2024
@Juan Romero thanks brother. It definitely helpes. Was any of those 5 times was within the one year of granting Asylum? Any information with you @Immigration Guy, you are also very informed gentleman here in this community. thanks
DS TSep 25, 2024
@Juan Romero I also have similar question as @Immigration Guy. thanks
Immigration GuySep 25, 2024
it won't affect it @DS T you do not need AP. your RTD will be enough and your i485 will be intact. I've had several clients do that and I've chosen that route as well so yeah no Advance Parole!
Juan RomeroSep 25, 2024
@Immigration Guy I entered Canada with just RTD, green card pending. Same thing with Spain, I flew directly to Madrid from Miami. The Spanish immigration officer just asked about the purpose of my visit and stamp my RTD.
Juan RomeroSep 25, 2024
@DS T No I got my RTD after 14 months of my grant of Asylum. but like @Immigration Guy said that’s one of your benefits as an Asylee or refugee. You can apply for a RTD and still be able to return to the US without a problem.
singh gSep 25, 2024
@Juan Romero Did you had Canadian visa when you entered into canada?
Juan RomeroSep 25, 2024
@prab g I did not have a Canadian Visa when I went, just the RTD
singh gSep 25, 2024
Did you enter through land border or fly? what questions they asked? how long did you stay? was that without green card?
Juan RomeroSep 25, 2024
I flew from Orlando to Montreal on September 5th and stayed until the 9th, They only asked me if I had anything to report to customs. And I did not have my green card when I Went.
singh gSep 25, 2024
@Juan Romero thanks for your information 🙏
Immigration GuySep 25, 2024
wow @Juan Romero that is very interesting. one last question if you don't mind. did they say anything when you checked in for your flight? in my case for Germany they made a hell of a big fuss on me needing a visa but then I showed proof etc only then they let me board. was curious as based on me contacting Spanish consulate and online resources you actually need a visa for Spain, was curious if at check in they made a deal out of it.
Immigration GuySep 25, 2024
also I flew from a Florida airport as well @Juan Romero
Juan RomeroSep 25, 2024
I flew with American Airlines, and they didn’t give me any trouble. The person that was helping us he went and talk with his supervisor or someone that knew more about it and he said that we were allowed to travel to Spain with the RTD because it was the form I-571. I am not sure if it was luck and we dealt with someone that wanted to help. But we did travel there with our RTD and no visa. And the immigration in Spain they only asked us about the purpose of the trip and how long we were going to be there. Less than a minute talk literally.
Immigration GuySep 25, 2024
I'm assuming same thing while going to Canada as well at checkin they talked to supervisor and that was it? @Juan Romero
MM BBSep 29, 2024
@Juan Romero I am impressed I thought Mexico don’t accept i571 that’s what they say on their embassy website. also Spain , I know Germany Netherlands Belgium and other 2 countries accept refugees travel document without a regular passport and visa if required. was this the only document you used for traveling?
Juan RomeroSep 30, 2024
@MM BB yes I went to Mexico twice with the RTD, first time the airline didn’t say anything to me and they let me board the plane. Second time I went I had to give them my home country passport or else they wouldn’t have let me board the plane, but when I was going through passport control I gave them my RTD and they just asked about the purpose of my trip and let me in without a problem. And Spain like I said before they let me in with Just the RTD but I did have my home country passport just in case. It might have been luck, I’m not sure but it worked for me. Good Luck
MM BBSep 30, 2024
@Juan Romero thanks for your reply. one last question does your home county passport let you in those countries without visa ?
Juan RomeroSep 30, 2024
@MM BB yeah no problem, it does to Mexico and Spain but not to Canada.
Nov 9, 2024
hey @Juan Romero I have a refugee travel document and I’m trying to go to Canada but it’s stating that I need a visa to enter in from the US also I’m looking at other European countries. Do you need a visa for Spain?
