tax question for immigration
I was married in 2020 but my wife is abroad and never step foot in US soil. I filed tax as single because I don’t have ssn of my wife. 2 days back I came to know that I need to file as married filed jointly even if your spouse is living abroad … I never knew that… i use credit karma/cash app to file tax.. I paid 10k+ in 2020 and 2021… wondering if this cause my case be delayed in NVC or any other immigration.

I’m in the same situation. I’m getting stuck with paying $3500. Where did you see that you are supposed to file jointly?

when you are married, ALWAYS filed MARRIED filed SEPARATELY to be out of the problem. that way you can amend after.

No, please file Married Filing Separately. You have to enter "NRA" in the Spouse's SSN section of the form. That's it. No need to report any of their income/assets at all, just yours. I have done this for 3 years with a tax accountant - it's the correct way to do it.

@ name was taken you need to try and fix that because it can cause big problems including a big fine get on it asap

You also can't file electronically when your spouse is non-resident alien (NRA) because on electronic forms they don't allow you to write "NRA" in the spouse SSN section. So it has to be filed in paper.

@name I say someone here who says their wife lives abroad and their accountant here applied for ITIN for the wife and he filed as married/jointly. Speak with an accountant.
