Student visa
Hi! I’m holding Student Visa (F1) and attending college. I’m wondering if I should maintain F1 visa while I’m waiting for the green card….because full time student has to take 12 credits which is hard to do as I have a full time job( I got work permit last month). thank you

Last time I checked, If your Spouse is a Citizen, you do not have to. But if its LPR, you will have to maintain your status until the time of approval.

you don’t have to if your spouse is a citizen, but it’s beneficial in case you get denied - you’d fall back into the F1 status

my spouse is a usc and have been waiting for my GC over a year after interview. I have a valid f1 visa and I was advised to maintain that until I get approved. always a good practice then to risk it. I didn’t apply for work permit at all

If your work permit approval is based on your pending I-485, you lose your F1 status the moment you work with your adjustment of status EAD (work permit). So it doesn't matter if you take 12 credits, 15 credits or 3 credits. You will no longer be in F1 status.
