To apply for a SSN you must show legal status in the US first i.e. work authorization or LPR. Since you have not applied for the adjustment of status yet you cannot apply for a SSN. There is a part of the form that allows you to apply for it through the I-485. My suggestion is to apply for I-485 ASAP. GOOD LUCK!

yes you are able to obtain a social security as long it is within the three months period of the validity of marriage period. you can go as soonest as 15 days after arrival to the social security office with your passport. there you will have the visa stamp on it and that shows your real status at the moment @Diana H @Puzzle Head the status is legal while on the three months that they give you as soonest they fiance enters the United States.

most people dont know this and do it when they do the adjustment of status but they do provide you with one @Diana H

I just read the SSN application instructions and they say if you are applying as an alien not allowed to work (because you don’t have EAD yet), then you need a valid reason from a government agency in order to apply. is this true? @melina perez
