RFIE - Marriage certificate was from a different county than the wedding - adjustment of status. What now?
Hello, I came on K1 visa and a week later we got married. The problem is that we got a RFIE asking for a marriage certificate from the same county where the marriage took place, but our wedding was in Grand Rapids Kent county and our marriage licence was from Ottawa county. What to do now? Obviously we are not able to get the marriage certificate from the county that the marriage took place.

hey oldrich : I just want to share my story. i lived in NYC, but applied marriage license in springfield, MA city hall. i got married in cape cod in Massachusetts but definitely different county. after the marriage ceremony we just mailed it to springfield, MA and our marriage certificate arrived in a week. haven’t got any RFE because of that.

@Domino thank you, exactly like us with the difference that it was Michigan
domino 22Jan 26, 2022
yeah I just checked Michigan rule and u guys did the correct thing. you have to apply in the county where you live but you can use it anywhere within Michigan. just send it again and write letter ( provide official link from the city hall ) and explain the situation. I’m sorry it happened to you. they can be so stupid

I honestly do not know whether they meant the same county… here is the exact formulation ‘For immigration purposes, the marriage must have been registered with the government agency authorized to register marriages from the location where the marriage took place.’
domino 22Jan 26, 2022
well from the snipet they didn’t say “it has to be from the same county” ???
Oldrich DutyJan 26, 2022
@domino but it says location of the marriage which was Grand Rapids Michigan and we had Ottawa county marriage certificate
domino 22Jan 26, 2022
that’s why I told you to send it again this time with brief explanation that in Michigan, you are allowed to get married in different county but you have to file for marriage license in the county where you live. i just looked up my marriage certificate, there’s no “county” word show up at all. it just stated the city of springfield and where we got married “welfleet”. it’s definitely not the same county since it’s 4 hours drive
domino 22Jan 26, 2022
print out both Kent and Ottawa marriage license regulation and highlight the important word “have to apply where u live but can use in any county in the states” I just both county and they have that word

@domino thank you
