Renouncing GC for Visa
Looking for experiences or advice from anyone who has gone through something similar.
My family members are long-term green card holders who have spent the past several years living primarily outside the U.S. Their pattern has been short visits to the U.S. — roughly 15–20 days every few months — while maintaining homes, businesses, and their day-to-day life abroad. They are now considering voluntarily surrendering their green cards via I-407 at a U.S. embassy and simultaneously applying for B1/B2 tourist visas, since that reflects how they actually live.
The complicating factor is that their children are U.S. citizens and reside in the U.S. The visits would primarily be to see family.
Has anyone been through this or know someone who has? Specifically:
- Did the B1/B2 get approved after surrendering the green card?
- Did the consular officer raise the citizen children as a concern?
- Is there a sequencing approach that worked better — e.g. applying for B1/B2 before surrendering?
Not looking for legal advice, just real experiences. We're also consulting an attorney but wanted to hear from people who've actually navigated this.
