Promotion after green card
Hello everyone. Is it okay to accept a promotion a few weeks after getting the green card from the same employer? Will it affect the green card in any way or the naturalization process?? I am getting mixed feedback on this and I really need some clarity and peace of mind while accepting this promotion. Thanks in advance.

I have the exact same question! My employer wants to promote me in a few weeks. I think prior to approval you can use I-485J if I-485 has been pending for 180 days. I’m just wondering what if the GC got approved prior to the promotion…

@GC ASAP How do you know? I already have my green card. I got it a few weeks ago. Now I am accepting a promotion. Some lawyers say you should hold the same position for at least a few months before making a change.

You should be within the boundaries of your PERM approval for the meantime. If the progression of your promotion does not change your job responsibilities then you are within your approved PERM if not consult an attorney to avoid problems during your next step which is your naturalization in the future.

@J A , my promotion does not change my job responsibilities more than 50% and I am at the same location. What has changed is title and salary.

@Permanent Resident when did you receive your SSN card after you receive the GC?

@J A my title has changed and my new paycheck might come from corporate instead of the local office. that is what I need some clarity on. and I don’t have the answer for that.

@sky91 light I only received the green card, not the SSN. I don’t know if I will be receiving one. how do I know?

Ask your attorney that is the advice I can give to you

@Matt I lost my job, old employer filed I-485J together and didnt withdraw my 485. And then today my 485 got approved before I can port it to a new employer at 180 days.
I am speechless. At naturalization app it would look like I never work for my sponsor after getting my green card.......
