no. my understanding is that as long as they have health insurance they are not a public charge. A public charge would be someone who has no health insurance, shows up at the hospital, runs up a $30,000 bill and then asks the hospital for financial assistance.

do you pay for the insurance monthly? a friend recently went for an interview NJ and the officer mentioned that she's a public charge because it's not private insurance and is paid for by the State. I think it depends on the officer handling your case because I know other people where it wasn't a problem
