No, you don’t have to give an explanation. My husband also only field taxes in 2022 and we didn’t explain why he didn’t file the previous years and we got approved.

We didn’t submit any paystubs, just the information about taxes for 2022. I found conflicting info on which tax document to upload so we uploaded my husbands Individual Income Tax Return (form 1040), W-2 and Tax Transcript, so basically everything you get tax related and we had no issues.

our lawyer asked us for 2020 and 2021 as well apparently as proof of us living at the same address… but my husband works for himself and so he did not qualify (after business expenses) in those two years… only 2022. we also submitted bank statement showing deposits from his clients in 2023 to show income is ongoing
