New SSN Card Required
Tried calling SSA several times with no luck, so here is my question: Until now I had a SSN card with “DHS WORK AUTH” printed on it. Recently my status got adjusted to a permanent resident. Do I need to apply for a new SSN card? Would my SSN change if I apply? And if the number changes, then would the credits earned towards SS (need 40 to qualify) get transferred to the new number?

Your SSN will stay the same. Expect your new SSN card (same number but without restrictions) by mail. If you don’t receive it you should go to your local office or call them

as I know: Your Social Security number will be the same . you cannot have two Social Security numbers. you can request a new card that will come without DHS phrase, but the same number.

same number and restriction removed as above two mentioned. but it’s not mandatory to do now. it’s mandatory to update when you take citizenship.

my status just changed n I made an appointment to get a New card without restrictions which came 10 days after

@Camille did you fill out SS-5 while applying for a new one? Because that form has four options: 1. US citizen, 2. With work auth, 3. Without work auth, 4. Others. There is no specific field for Permanent Resident in that form.

I just called d office n they set the appointment. they asked my birth date and ss #. I did fill print n fill the form out n took it with me to the appointment along with my green card

no. I'm in queens n my call time was more than 30 mins b4 I got an agent. make sure it's the card center u calling

I went to ss to update my status. after week they sent me new ss card without stamp

Did anyone do it via a dropbox facility? My SSA office won’t do appointments for non-new applicants. Sounds scary cuz they asked me to come over and seal my original green card in an envelope into their dropbox and asked to provide contact details so that they can call me back to get the new SSN card

I won’t do that. I will wait for USC and then update. as I said earlier, it’s not a mandate to update ssn office after GC.

Agreed. Will wait out until USC. In-person appt is fine but a dropbox is something new and untested. Thanks for the advice!

u can call them again and tell them that by law u cant leave ur green card there as u are required to keep it with u at all times.They should make u an appointment after.Not a lawyer
