My experience: "if you don't follow up, they may forget your application for ever".
Although I received RFE and interview appointment, my application never updated to show those steps.
After 14 months of no follow/no update, I contacted with an agent at Emma to see if they received my RFE reply. She escalated to a second level agent, but I didn't get any information. But, I received an email a week later from my local office that my application is under review.
a month later, I applied for my second I-131 (the first one was about to expire after a year), and I was going to ask for an emergency I-131. The day after receiving my I-131 application, USCIS sent an interview invite.
after more than a year of waiting, my follow ups paid off within 2 months.
