If you have asylum case pending and are using government programs like Medicaid, it’s not considered as bad as if you had marriage-based or employment-based case. You are here on your own, without a sponsor. It’s understandable that you need some time to get back on your feet, learn the language and get a good paying job. You are starting a new life in new country. However, if you have been in US for a quite long time, officer/judge can be biased. You could go to school, get some sort of training, etc. Recently, there was a report of a judge asking for asylum applicant’s tax returns for the last few years. Your tax returns show any government support you have received. Besides having a good case, you also need to show you are good person and will be a good citizen if they allow you to stay. They need to understand they you’ll go to work instead of collecting unemployment checks, etc. So it’s okay to get some government help, but you shouldn’t overuse it if you’ve been in country for long enough. You could get a job that offers insurance instead of using government programs funded by taxpayers’ money. It shouldn’t be very difficult because many businesses are understaffed due to Covid (at least that what I would think if I was was an immigration officer)

You can start with community college and then transfer to the university. If you had previously received any international education credits, you can have them evaluated & transferred. You won’t be eligible for government scholarships since you are not a permanent resident, but you can apply for private scholarships. I ended up getting about half of my tuition covered for my associate’s (2 year) degree by a private sponsor. Some companies will pay for your education & training - research apprenticeships. I know Amazon & McDonald’s pay for their employees tuition too when they meet certain requirements.
I understand what do you mean when you say you are paying taxes but you never know how an officer or a judge will comprehend the situation. They may think you are entitled to that government money OR they can think that you are paying taxes but then you are getting them back in the form of Medicaid. You may or may not get lucky here

Medicaid is only a public charge if you are receiving long term care at a nursing home or receiving cash benefits. Read up on the public charge policy on what can hurt your chances of receiving immigration benefits.

You are welcome.
I forgot the most common way. You can get a student loan that you don’t have to start paying off until you graduate
