Medical Debt Collection
Hello! I'm currently a student and I'm writing here to get some advice. I missed payment for a medical bill recently and just heard that the hospital sold the account off to a debt collection agency. The reason I missed payment was out of a simple misunderstanding. I checked my account and saw that they billed me for 500 dollars. After dithering for a while, I noticed that the account now had 0 dollars in balance. So I assumed my insurance took care of it. I've been getting some weird calls lately which I assumed were spam calls, and they've been leaving me voice mails in Chinese which I don't understand. I checked the number online later and they turned out to be some kind of debt collection agency? I mean, I pay my credit card bills every month, so I was really confused where I could've accrued a debt, but then I checked the hospital account, where they told me that they handed over my account to a debt collector. There's still about 200 dollars left to pay on the balance. I'm just wondering if this is going to negtiavely impact my credit score. And if so, by how much?

medical collection doesn’t stop you from getting a green card, buy a house, get a credit card or a car. matter of fact the consumer reports made some changes to medical collections that’s less than $500 to be taken off of credit histories taking effect in July 2023. I’ll advise it’s either you pay it off/ payment plan or leave it as it is. don’t pay anyone to remove collection or repair your credit, majority don’t do anything. I have a medical collection of $95 and my credit score is 703.

if it was sent to collections it will affect your FICO score. I would suggest to call the debt collector who took your debt and ask them to remove the report from your credit if you pay. It will still take months for your credit score to be as it was before this.

please do not deal with a credit repair service 🤦🏾‍♀️. what type of wrong advice is that? if the account balance is $200, why would she pay $199 for a service. if you’d like to pay the debt off, call the debt collector and negotiate the debt. let’s say the debt is $200. ask them for a pay to delete option. negotiate 50-75% off the debt. tell them that you’re not working and you do not have thr means to work anytime soon so that’s the best that you can do. whatever amount you guys settled on, ask them to mail it in writing with the pay to delete included. do not pay anything without having it in writing. now, if you choose not to pay, it’ll affect your credit at first. it’ll also stop affecting your credit after sometime. by law, that collection is required to drop off your credit record after 5-7 years. if this is the route that you want to go, do not answer any calls from them. do not talk to them. the statue of limitations resets every time you do. your score has already been impacted now that it went to collections. it can’t harm you anymore. the deed has been done

Don't pay it... let it be. it has already impacted your credit score. If you pay it, there will be no guarantee that it's resolved as it won't be. debt collector will called/emailed you but after some times of no response, they will give up.

@J stronger I guess you don’t know that most medical debt are always paid off by the government once the hospitals write it off as bad debts it’s a win win for the hospital and loss the him/her. most people here are giving advices here based on first hand experiences too. medical debt doesn’t affect anything after 2-3 months it wears off of your credit. nobody said credit can’t be repaired but it can’t by paying someone to repair it, cos even if he pays it off it will still be on his credit for couple of months too. and meanwhile starting next year July medical collections less than $500 shouldn’t be on your credit you can dispute it easily. medical reports doesn’t stop or affect anything and it doesn’t depicts the “person’s character”

@J stronger this is not called “ taking advantage of the government” plus it also doesn’t depict the kind of person one is. it simply means not taking losses!!! you’re free to take loss but stop forcing someone to take the same losses as you. to each to their own as you’ve said. medical debt doesn’t affect anything I’m talking based off first hand experiences too!! stop stereotyping people. it’s people like you that wouldn’t want to hire someone because of their credit score 😆😆 just drop advices and move on stop scaring people thats bad! have a blessed day!!
