Job Switch after Green Card Approval
I recently got my green card approved through my company and got a much better offer from a different company. Can I switch job without any issues?

as far as I know there are no issues. I would confirm with a lawyer however.

Congrats to your GC approval! I looked this up many many times and you find conflicting answers everywhere. some lawyers say you can leave right away, some advise to stay at least 3-6 months. I’m in a similar situation and wondering if I should try to make the change before I-485 approval. I thought that might be close but looking at your timeline I might have plenty of time

yes

Hi @Matt ! we are in the same boat. I felt like I’m close to I-485 approval after my case was transferred again to NBC last month but I want to change my employer. Did you ask your lawyer about it?
Matt Aug 1, 2023
Hi @LM F . I really wish I knew the remaining days. I know that my case is with a field office but no clue how long it takes from there. I can’t ask my lawyer because they work for my current company :)

No issues about changing a job guys. if i485 is pending for >6 months, don't hesitate to change jobs. don't suffer in a bad job or give up good opportunities because "it's too close to the approval now". i485J is a pretty simple form the new employer can file it - just make sure the new job is in the same field

@John Doe - you can change the job after green card approval. there's no obligation to stay at the old job according to USCIS rules. however, best practice will be to stay in a job in a related field. for example if your GC was approved for a software engineer, and after approval you started working as an interior decorator or started working with Uber/Lyft driver- that would raise a big red flag. but if you remain a software engineer in another company - no issues

Hi @M S ! I’m thinking of filing I-485J next week but I’m little bit afraid that it might delay the approval.
M SAug 1, 2023
@LM F as I said in your other post, this fear is unreasonable. they will look at i485 and i485j together, I'm not sure why you think it'll be delayed
Anna KAug 2, 2023
actually, I've heard the opposite. i485j actually triggers the approval (well, if everything is ok). Not sure was it a coincidence though or not.
LM FAug 3, 2023
@Anna K well, some people say it delays the approval but other say, it triggers the approval since they are moving you from I-485 long line to I-485J shorter line.

well, the entire process is such a lottery 🤷 so, I hope you get lucky 🤞

@M S @John Doe I heard that while you can switch employers (remaining in the same field) after GC, doing that too soon (some lawyers advised to wait 180 days after GC approval because that could lead to losing your GC during the time of naturalization to become US citizen...
I have not been able to take on many great job offers due to my status (they dont sponsor) and really hope to see light at the end of the tunnel...

don’t be ungrateful to the company who sponsored you. also, don’t jeopardize the chance of naturalize in the future. actions you take now will matter in the future. unless you are in a toxic environment or being abused in your current job, stay at least for a year or two.
