i131 Refugee travel document (based on Asylum)
hello everyone, I got a refugee travel document last year and its about to expire. I still did not get my green card. and I want to renew/reapply for a new travel document.
my questions are,
1. I can not renew correct?
2. If I reapply, how soon before the current one expires can I apply?
3. Do I have to return the current one?
I appreciate every piece of advice/ recommendation.

I reapplied for a renewal of my i131 since mai mine expired last month and up to now it’s not approved

The I-131 RTD is taking 17 months to process so If you send your application now you will receive by next year , as far as I know you need to send your old RTD right before the approval of your new RTD ..

Just curious, have you traveled anywhere with it?

@Cristina B i got a UK visa on it and went there, my layover in Netherlands, entered there with no visa since the RTD is that good. also you won't need visa for Germany Cyprus and couple other European countries. so it's worth it. not to mention Canada (and perhaps Caribbean countries just ask first)

@M E Very nice! Regarding layovers I know as long as you are not going out if the airport you should be fine 🤷♀️

@M E Nice👍 Yeah I see Netherlands it is in the list of visa free for RTD. By the way, can you travel with RTD right before it expires? , I know there might be some requirements, they want the refugee passport to have at least 3 months left of availability when coming back to US or is just rummors? anybody knows?

@Cristina B from my understanding, most countries need at least 6 months left on it before entering their country, except Germany 3 months. I didn't want to risk not following this rule. But as far as returning, honestly didn't even think twice about it, makes sense that as long as the RTD is valid you're good to return.
Can you please send me the list of the countries that don't need visa with RTD.

@M E U.S. Refugee Travel Document (United States) visa not required for Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Croatia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Hungary and Cyprus.
