Congratulations! That's a significant milestone in your journey. When USCIS sends an I-797
Notice of Action for an approved asylum application, it's their official confirmation that your asylum request has been granted 1.
Here's what this approval means for you:
1. You now have official asylum status in the United States
2. You're legally authorized to live and work in the U.S.
3. You can apply for a Social Security card
4. After one year as an asylee, you'll be eligible to apply for permanent residence (green card)
It's crucial to keep this I-797 notice in a safe place as it's an important document that proves your legal status. You might need it for various purposes like:
• Employment verification
• Social Security card application
• State ID or driver's license applications
• Future immigration benefits
Given your interest in understanding these procedures clearly, I can explain the next steps you might want to consider, like the timeline for applying for permanent residence or bringing family members.
