You have to submit, at least, 3 months prior the expiration date of the EAD...

Do not wait until 3 months before it expires, submit 6 months which is what you are allowed. I applied 4.5 months before my own expired and gained 180 automatic extension and still have it received.

I was lucky because the I 765 is a paper process, but when they received my documents they changed my process into an electronic one. I think that was the key to got a quick answer...
