I-485 interview
Hello everyone, I have a situation and two questions for those who might have experienced something similar.
In November 2022, I applied from within the U.S. (adjustment of status) through my lawyer, sponsored by my green-card holder spouse. We submitted all forms, including the medical exam (I-693). In May 2023, my I-130 and I-765 (work permit) applications were approved, and I received my parole (advance parole) document. We were only waiting for the I-485 approval.
On the myProgress tab for the I-485, it showed 4 steps, and 3 of them were completed (it said 'Step 3 of 4 completed'). The description for the last step was something like 'Interview, if necessary.'
On September 12, I received a notification for an interview appointment.
So my two questions are:
1. Is this normal? I thought cases were often being waived.
2. Another lawyer mentioned that as the interview date gets closer, I might receive a message saying 'Your attendance is not required.' Has anyone encountered this situation or received such a cancellation notice?
Thank you for any insights!

Just get prepared with your spouse for your interview. It's normal. They are interviewing most cases nowadays. You will fine.

if your spouse is gc holder, did your spouse file only for the i130 first or applied i-765 and i-485 concurrently?
I can't wait to see if the green card is really green Sep 22, 2025
Yes, this is normal. Even though some I-485 cases get waived, many applicants are still called for interviews, especially when the petition is based on marriage to a green-card holder. USCIS often uses the interview to verify the relationship and update background checks. It is also true that sometimes interviews are canceled closer to the date if USCIS decides they have enough evidence. Some applicants have reported receiving notices that their attendance was no longer required, but it’s not guaranteed. It’s best to prepare for the interview as scheduled, and if USCIS cancels it, you will be notified directly.
