yes. it's safe! I flew out several times with it. It is however a bit uncomfortable when coming back in the US. They put you in a room aside and ask questions before letting you back in the country. Also, it's recommended to leave for not more than 14days, and for emergency reasons only! Good luck.

@gigi kmn what type of questions?

Well, I had questions like: Which country were you in? For what reasons? How long did you stay there? Have you flown somewhere else? etc. Sometimes they don't even ask questions. They make you wait while they're on their computers (probably checking if your case is still pending!) Make sure you tell the truth!!! Cause again they want to know if you were out for the right reasons... That's why it's important not to stay outside the country for too long.. Cause what if while traveling you get a decision and (knock on wood) in the worse case scenario it's "denied", you are then stuck and won't be able to come back!

my advised, if you had your interview and waiting for your interview result, please do not risk it. do not travel until you get a decision. but if you are still waiting for interview date, you are free to use you AP

You can definitely go as long as your case is active. It is safe. I have left the U.S. 2 times already using travel document and everything went well. I’m about to go again in July. In my way back in, they only pull you aside to check the status of your case. Go ahead and do enjoy, you should be fine.
