Filing Taxes
I’m trying to file taxes for 2022, and the extension deadline is October 16. I am a U.S. citizen (USC), but my wife has never been to the United States and has no work history here. I want to know how I can file the tax return without an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) and SSN (Social Security Number). However, if I apply for an ITIN number, it will take six months, and I’ll miss the deadline.
(please share your experiences)
thank you in advance

It's hard enough filing consular processing to bring a spouse and it makes the filing of the taxes that much more difficult. I'm a US citizen and I kept trying to e-file taxes myself like I normally do on H & R block, and then TurboTax but it kept preventing because my husband resides in his home country with no ITIN or SSN. I had to hire an accountant to tell me basically you can't e-file the tax return, you fill out the form and mail to the IRS, and for the SSN of your husband you enter the numbers 999-99-9999 because you have to input something in that field. If your spouse doesn't file as a resident, you can file as Married Filing Separately. This is the default filing status for a U.S. citizen married to a nonresident alien.

@Shari 07 yes plz plz let me know. my wife is outside the US
Shari 07Jul 19, 2023
ok

@Shari 07 then why file tax return together? i mean if they’re outside the US, it should make sense to file separately cause theyre not a tax resident here
Shari 07Jul 19, 2023
that’s what I tried to did married filing separately but through filing electronically it asks for either ITIN or SSN

@Shari 07 put 999-999-9999 and print it. I think that’s what turbo tax told me. but did you ask the IRS if we can send the itin form with our tax return?
shariq07 -Jul 31, 2023
@april 2022 just print it out and send it; that’s how I did, and they accepted it
