Filing Joint Tax Return 2020 without SSN?
My husband and I just had an I485 interview today, and status changed to "new card is being produced". Because I want to think about the worst case scenario so what if I hadn't received GC by the time we wanted to file joint tax return. What should we do? And I haven't yet received EAD card neither. Thanks in advance, folks.

you could have applied the w-7 form with the IRS to get a TIN number

@Bibi Atosco: thanks pal, appreciate it!

file your 4846 form if I remember the number correctly. it will help you to file the tax after 15 April without penalty since you are waiting for GC

I filed for my itin number in October 2020 and I received it on February 😡 that's how long does it take.

@Dominic Nguyen: Thanks pal, It's 4868 form, I've just been researching but still confused, lol. So should I apply for W7/ITIN or apply for 4868 form?

@Lisa Modhwadia: Did you file your ITIN before filed tax return? Because last time we made appointment with the IRS, the officer said we must apply along with the tax return.
Dominic NguyenMar 9, 2021
@rachel W7 first, then file 4846 to let IrS know that you are working on ITIN, so you don’t get penalty for submitting tax return late.

@Rachel Z last year my husband filed taxes by himself in July 2020even though we were married because we thought we would get my gc approved and the pandemic started. We came back to our accountant and she did an amended (form1040-x and form w-7) in October 2020, 1.- To file our jointly taxes and 2.- to file for my Itin number. It took more than 15 weeks to get my Itin. This year we going to file jointly. Still waiting for our tax return from last year when we did the amended in October.

H&R Block recommend filing as single since wife is not working and amend taxes next year to not risk losing any stimulus money

@Dominic Nguyen: Thanks for the helpful advice. My husband and I have decided to file 4846, and wait for my GC to come (my case just got approved), then file like normal. W7 seems complicated to us.

@Lisa Modhwadia: Pandemic sucks! The delay is what we worries about, because the deadline is coming in a month. So my husband and I is gonna to file the form 4868 to extend the due date. Thanks for sharing your precious experience, truly appreciate it.

@d Gilbert: I have a question. I have no income, but my husband's income is $100,000+. How to file tax as single while we're married?

my wife and I filed before I received my green card and ssn. Say unemployed on the tax forms. we got a decent return.
