Federal court awards $112 million to immigrants held unlawfully
On Nov 6th, 2025 Federal court in New York awarded $112 million to immigrants who were illegally held by the Suffolk County Sheriff’s office. The Sheriff’s office had an agreement with ICE & held people longer than they should had on the basis of an ICE detainer, which was determined by the court to be illegal. Some of the held were legal & some illegal, but the monetary damages will be awarded to everyone.

stop spreading misinformation Jury Awards $112 Million to 674 Immigrants Unlawfully Held by Suffolk County for ICE Handover BROOKLYN, NY — In a victory for immigrant rights, a federal jury today found Suffolk County and the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office financially liable and responsible for violating the constitutional rights of hundreds of Long Islanders unlawfully detained on behalf of federal immigration authorities. In a unanimous decision, the jury awarded $112 million to the class of 674 people who were part of the 2017 lawsuit against Suffolk County and the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department for unlawfully holding individuals in county jails after posting their bail or resolving their cases, for the sole purpose of facilitating the immigration enforcement authorities to take them into federal custody.
