Why would you apply for new SSN if you already have one?

Green20 is right. you do not need it as long as you have one.

EAD comes from NBC, ssn card comes from the social security administration. I’ve seen people say to wait 2 weeks and if it doesn’t come you call and schedule an appointment to get your ssn. About the previous comments.. if you previously had a ssn card with conditions (such as the one you get when you do OPT - says “valid for work ONLY with DHS authorization” above your name) you can apply for a new ssn to remove this condition like getting a new ssn when you applying for green card. My lawyer advised me to also check the box to get new ssn card even though I had an old one from OPT

I got mine SSN 3 days later after receiving the EAD. but I’m confused by your post, if you have a SSN why asking for a new one?

My understanding is that you can't be issued a new ss card with no dhs authorization until your green card is approved. If you currently have a ss card with dhs authorization you will continue to use that with your EAD and when your green card is approved, then you can remove the dhs condition. The only scenerio I can think of is if your current ss card is not valid for employment, hence you may need to get a new one which will also have dhs condition because it will be based on your current EAD and not your green card because you don't have one for now.

👆 this makes a lot of sense. Thank you for clarifying Green20. I didn’t know this. So does everyone who gets EAD and ss card in the application process have to remove conditions after they get green card? It’s like this paperwork process is never ending!

after your get your GC you must contact SSA to remove those conditions on your SSN. numbe will be the same

most employers don’t take you with those conditions on your SSN but as long as you have a EAD it should be fine just show them all the necessary documentation. but you won’t get the updated SSN until you get your GC because your currently out of status right now until you get that Card.

it shouldn’t. he’s supposed to wait until he has his green card before the conditions can be removed.. if he have an EAD he can work!.. Idk why people rush to do these things patience man.. you gonna get the same SSN when you get your green card!

remember that when you get the SSN you have to rescind your ITIN (if you have one) by sending a letter to the IRS. and if you have any credit cards, to update that info with them as well as the credit bureaus. good luck all
