Driving license renew pending 485
Hi everyone,
anyone here from California who has renewed driving license using pending 485?
my driving license will expire soon.
I went to DMW today and they said they cannot renew it without having EAD/GC!
they said I cannot apply for AB60 too!!
Any advise will be appreciated.

Hi Raha, I'm in Wisconsin (which has stricter rules for driver's license) and I was able to renew it with pending GC - I also have a pending L1 (non-immigrant visa) extension, but from what I understand the pending GC gives you status to stay in the country already so you should be able to renew with that only.
The DMV clerk may be uninformed, what you can do is go to their website, print the rules for proof of status and bring it with you to the DMV.

@Jen, did you renew it or it’s the first one?
it seems they do not renew if you had the previous driving license when your work visa was valid.
which city in CA?

i renewed my license. My 485 and renewal of my O1-b visa are on pending now.
I live here with legal status, but now i still don't have any proper documents for renewal of my driver license.

@caio my lawyer has advised you can do a renewal on ab60 even if had previous full license. I am in California. your dmv is wrong

was your driving license expired when you applied fo AB60?

no test.
but you have to take a photo again.
and when you are done, DMV would take your old license, and give you a temporarily paper driver license. The new plastic one is going to be deliverd home within 3weeks

if driving license get expired and no renew until we get the ead/CG do we need to redo the road test?
considering one did not apply for AB60.

well. I think you might need take a only written test again.(?) im not sure. but Actually To drive a car with expired driver's license is illegal. If you get caught by police officer with some reasons(car accident), it's gonna be big deal to especially you who have been waiting for the green card. but if you won't drive your car for the period til get the EAD,..
it would be ok.

thanks all,
I finally applied for AB60. the lady in dmv told me it takes 6-8 months to get the physical card.
I may need to go to dmv each 2 months to get a new interim one till I get the physical card!

@raha maybe your EAD will come soon and then you can go back and ask for a normal renewal?
