do you need EAD if you are a granted asylee?
my EAD has expired but I heard that I might not even need it if I’m a granted asylee. so what would be considered a proof for employment then? I-94 and SSN? and did anyone go through that? how do employers react and if they now.

Some employers go through an E-Verify system to see if you’re valid for employment

you can use your asylum i94 to get a new unrestricted social security card. that’s your proof that you don’t need ead.

If you are an asylee, you are authorized employment as part of your asylee status.

“After being granted asylum in the United States, DHS issues a Form I-94, Arrival/Departure Record, to asylees. Form I-94 will contain a stamp or notation, such as “asylum granted indefinitely” or the appropriate provision of law (8 CFR 274a .12(a)(5) or INA 208) to show their employment authorization. An asylee can also present an electronic Form I-94 with an admission class of “AY.” Form I-94 is an acceptable List C document and does not expire. Asylees who choose to present this document must also present a List B identity document, such as a state-issued driver’s license or identification card. When completing Form I-9, asylees should indicate “alien authorized to work” and enter “N/A” on the expiration date line in Section 1, even if they have an EAD with an expiration date. USCIS issues EADs to asylees. These are acceptable List A documents; however, decisions from immigration judges or the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) granting asylum are not acceptable List C documents because they are not issued by DHS.”

@arthur I got my SSN back in the times when I was in US on J-1, and my SSN has a restriction written on it that I’m allowed to work with work authorization document only (I’m sure that’s how it should be for anyone who has not a permanent resident). Check yours if you have a restriction written on yours. Based on the comments above, you can apply for an unrestricted SSN, unless you already have one!

Arthur, basically if it says “valid for work only with dhs authorization” - it’s restricted. Check if yours says that on the front (you can google restricted SSN to see what it looks like). after getting your asylum approval you can call social security administration and tell them you need a new SSN card that’s unrestricted. You can use it as proof for employers. You can also apply for an EAD (via USCIS) but you don’t have to.

@katie Thank you so much! yeah my SSN is already unrestricted. so do I just show I-94 where it says granted asylum and my ssn for employment and that would be enough?
K
Katie KNov 29, 2021
It should be enough!

I have looked into renewing my EAD and it says that I need to file I-765 and it costs $580 which seems peculiar to me. Am I looking into something wrong? Is there another way to renew my EAD? And does someone have more information about getting the unrestricted SSN and where do I do that? Thank you!

Ryan, what’s your status? are you an asylee/green card holder?
K
Katie KJan 24, 2022
if you were granted asylee status you don’t need a new EAD

I have been granted asylee status indefinitely. I have applied for my green card last May and I’m still waiting on response for that.

Ok that’s great! you don’t need EAD (you can get it if you want to but you don’t have to). You just need to get an updated SSN that will show no restrictions. You basically get it through the social security administration. You can use that as proof with employers. I don’t know how it works if you still want to get the EAD, not sure if it’s free or you have to pay. but you don’t need it!
