US allows dual citizenship

Tnx. I was born in Iran. Does it mean third citizenship?
Lilo PelekaiJan 28, 2022
Iraj - it only means 3rd citizenship if you have the citizenship of Iran. some countries let you keep as many citizenships as possible while some restrict to one at a time. as Uros said, you shouldn't have issues on the US side.

my parents were Iranian and I was born in Iran. Does it mean that I am a Citizen of Iran by default?

so Iranian passport might be an issue. Iran is one of the countries you can’t collect US pension/benefits from etc much like North Korea etc. Remember all those Canadian citizens a few years back where they had Iranians passports which they used to travel to Iran but used their Canadian passports to travel to US? they wouldn’t let some in, some were questioned for 24hrs? I suggest using a lawyer.

I have no idea about that case where they held people for 24 hours, any link to that, it seems interesting?
Lilo PelekaiJan 28, 2022
Oooh, Yes, Waiting Patiently is right. and I believe it still applies. now that we are talking about it I remember skipping a trip to Iran because of those issues, as I would have had troubles getting back to the US and afterward if I had an Iranian stamp anywhere in my passport... good catch, Waiting Patiently! 👍

May I know I am a citizen of Iran by default when my parents both Iranian and I was born in Iran too?
Lilo PelekaiJan 28, 2022
Iraj - If you have the Iranian passport then you're Iranian. as to birth right, you have to check with that country as that differes by countries. it's automatic for many and not for others. but holding a passport from a country means that's a country you have citizenship from.

so I have two Citizenships of Iran and Canada, and going for US Citizenship.
Lilo PelekaiJan 28, 2022

and I don’t know what will they ask me to do to obtain US Citizenship?
Lilo PelekaiJan 28, 2022
Iraj- there are requirements to fulfill before you can apply for the US citizenship. please, perform a Google search as they're all on there. 🙂 the USCIS website has plenty of information too.

Just google ‘Iranian Canadian held at Canada/US border’ and lots of articles appear. I’m from Canada too and this has always been a problem because Iran only recognizes Iranian citizenship so a lot of Canadian Iranians keep their Iranian passports to travel to Iran and Canadian to travel to everywhere else. America doesn’t officially recognize any other countries Citizenship but doesn’t enforce this rule HOWEVER they prefer you use ur American passport for all travel. Do not think you’ll be able to have an American passport and travel to Iran at leisure using an Iranian passport while also being a US citizen. There have been Irish Americans with Irish passports getting in trouble so can you imagine the mess with Iranian passport lol I just think it’s wise to use a lawyer.

Tnx all. Great help
Lilo PelekaiJan 28, 2022
Waiting Patiently - it's an all mess indeed. I have friends with Iranian passport and other country passports and they do as you described with travels and sometimes still get held at the airport.

Waiting PatientlyJan 28, 2022
yes it’s bad for sure esp with Iranian passports. I think there have been incidents sadly where people with not the best intentions use their US passports to leave US and then they take the foreign passport to travel to other countries before returning to US so sadly everyone else of that origin gets extra screenings. All it takes is a few to ruin it for rest.

Never knew this one, thanl you both for this, wow.
Lilo PelekaiJan 28, 2022
Waiting Patiently - oh yes. the same applies to the US immigration system. it used to be easier than it is today to immigrate in the US. there're always bad actors who ruin it for everybody else. Uros - you're welcome. 🙂
