Case mishandled by lawyer and closed with no prior notice.
I hope this message finds you well.
I’m writing to inform you all of a very distressing situation regarding my previous legal representatives, Gehi and Associates New York. I found out yesterday without any warning or formal notice that they have closed my case and are no longer representing me, despite my case still being pending with USCIS.
Over the past several months, I had been calling their office regularly for updates and requesting that my lawyer call me back. Unfortunately, I never received any return calls. Then yesterday, in a moment of panic over my immigration status and needing to see a doctor, I called again. The receptionist repeated the same line that the lawyer would call me back but this time I explained the urgency and my fears about leaving home without clarity on my status and ICE.
After pressing further, the receptionist told me to wait five minutes, and then hours later finally informed me that my case had been closed by the firm. I was completely shocked. I was never contacted, warned, or given any explanation about this decision.
I now believe that my lawyers mishandled my case. For the past three years, I had been consistently visiting their office, monthly and later every two months asking for updates. They kept pushing the timeline, from three months to seven, then nine, and so on. I asked multiple times why I hadn’t received any receipt notices except for my work permit, and they always told me to wait.
Only in late 2024 did I discover that USCIS had tried to contact me by mail back in 2022, but the documents were undeliverable. I never received notices for my I-360, I-485, or travel permit only the work permit. My lawyers should have followed up with USCIS when I first raised this concern. But they didn’t. Instead, I was left in the dark while continuing to pay them $300 every month until 2023, when I could no longer afford to do so.
I feel scammed, abandoned, and emotionally abused by my lawyers. These last three years have been filled with uncertainty and pain, especially after surviving abuse in my marriage. I came here hoping to rebuild my life, but instead I’ve been retraumatized, now not just by my past, but by the very people who were supposed to help me move forward.
This has been an enormous shock, and I am struggling to process it. I feel completely alone and unsupported. Please advise me what go do. I went to the One Police Plaza to get my finger print done now I don’t know how should I sent it the uscis, that was supposed to be sent already with the VAWA packet, by my previous lawyers.
They put me in the dark and difficult situation.

@Ayoosh in this scenario call Bar Association in the state where your lawyer practice and they will take care about it. Hopefully you do have all receipts and prove what you have paid unless you didn’t tell us everything and they had reason to say you “thank you”
bless EmmaJun 14, 2025
@Ayoosh I don’t think if you keep paying every month 300 and suddenly they drop your case it have to get more than one side of story something’s not add up
Bro YawJun 14, 2025
@Ayoosh I think you can request for the legal fees and if not successful, you can sue them that's if you have all the necessary evidence. Secondly, you can write to USCIS about the situation with every evidence. All is not lost. Just try to work things out in timely manner to prevent any further delays. Sorry to hear what you're going through.

@Ayoosh You said you stopped paying in 2023 and still called the office almost 2 years later and visited constantly.
It's an unfortunate situation but i understand both sides. They should have told you way back what was happening and you should've made some arrangements or paid it off by now.
You didn't honor your side of the agreement and they dropped your case.
Ayoosh Jun 14, 2025
@Yana Yana no they didn’t honor. lawyer said just pay deposit now once you get your work permit then you can pay 300 installments but once I signed the contract he started asking me for 300 because that was just verbal communication not in contract. he trapped me and I took money from sister and paid. she’s a witness. and secondly 3 years and still nothing. so who’s at fault here. I have been in touch with them since 2022 since the application idk where you read I contacted them after two years. I’m not stupid I paid them and made sure I contacted them every year 2-3 times every second month.
Ayoosh Jun 14, 2025
@Bro Yaw I was thinking the same to explain my situation to the USCIS about my lawyer. they changed my address to theirs office. I don’t get any notices. it goes to their offices and they don’t even share with me any notices. this is becoming a kind of abuse at this point. I only see online notices but not the actual physical notices where the detail are explained. I might have to contact bar association and sue them to get my money back. 9k is not less. for 800$ they closed my case I don’t think so it’s about money. it’s about mishandling my case and they don’t wanna get caught because I raised this last time I visited their office.
Ena 22Jun 14, 2025
@Ayoosh there are so many good/ethical laywers who would do it for some amount or less. I feed bad. how did you find this scammer ?
aiphy yogsJun 14, 2025
@Ayoosh I’m so sorry you’re going through this. Reading your story brought tears to my eyes because I’ve been in a similar place. I had a lawyer who was handling my VAWA case, and one day he just disappeared with no notice, no updates till this day. I know the fear of being left in limbo, especially when your future is on the line. Please don’t lose hope. You can write directly to USCIS to explain what happened, especially if the firm changed your address or withheld notices. Include any receipts or proof of communication you have, and update your current address. It may also help to file a complaint with the Bar Association in the state where the lawyer is licensed, they can look into what happened. You’re not alone, even though it may feel like it. I believe you’ll get through this. Take it one step at a time, and keep fighting for your peace and your future. You’ve already come this far and that strength is still in you.
Ayoosh Jun 14, 2025
@aiphy yogs thank you so much for understanding. reading your comment made me feel like somebody at least understands me. I have been crying for help since two years. I have two older sisters who are settled here but they don’t help me. ask me to do stuff by myself. even in this matter. is it so bad that I’m trying to build a new life. I have no other option but to explain everything to the uscis.
aiphy yogsJun 14, 2025
@Ayoosh you are so brave for still standing, still fighting, and still hoping even when it feels like you’re alone. Your pain is valid, and I hear you. You don’t owe anyone an apology for trying to rebuild your life. Please don’t let anyone make you feel like you’re asking for too much, you’re asking for what you deserve: safety, dignity, and fairness. When you write to USCIS, I strongly recommend that you notarize your statement or letter before you send it. It shows USCIS that the information is truthful and sworn under penalty of perjury, which helps strengthen your case. You can find a notary at most UPS Stores, some banks, or even online through services like Notarize.com. Make sure your letter clearly explains everything that happened, how your lawyer mishandled your case, and include copies of any all your payments, emails, or proof of contact. Send it by certified mail with a return receipt so you have proof that they got it. You are not invisible, Ayoosh. You are seen, and your voice matters. You’ve already taken a big step by speaking out asking around and I truly believe that this step will lead you to something better. Keep going. All the best.

Ayooshi think that law firm is among the one caught in fraudulent schemes by uscis in New York. I think that why your case was closed, so many people are affected, try to ask around if their office is still open for business.
Justina EmmanuelJun 15, 2025
I am so sorry for abuse by your lawyers, it’s so sad. keep fighting I am so proud of you for standing tall know you got this. Write to uscis I believe they can do a lot to help you. Good luck 👍

@aiphy yogs thank you so much for the information. I have noted down and do exactly what you said. God bless you for helping me.
Ayoosh Jun 15, 2025
@Justina Emmanuel thank you. I should have been careful specially after being abused by my ex husband. I was not mentally stable I just trusted the lawyers and went with their advice.

file a formal complaint with AILA and the New York Bar Association that way they will release reimburse your money. but make sure you file a formal complaint.

It happened to me. I left the payment $500 and he dropped my case. Then I made a deal, paid him, and he took my case back. So I totally understand not being able to pay. Try to make an agreement with him to see if it’s possible.

ayoosh call me if you can
Kerry SJun 18, 2025
@Ayoosh I am so sorry that you had to experience that. In addition to what some of the others have said, you can also request a FOIA so you can know what exactly was filed, and you'll also have a copy because you dont know what that lawyer filed or not since you haven't really seen anything. It may take a while to get those documents but request them anyway. I hope uscis favors you under the circumstance!
