it is better to file for adjustment of status from within USA then flying back to your home country as there are years of delay for interview due to COVID and they dont prioritize such cases when the applicant is out of country. The US embassy in any nation is also backlogged with many many cases. Good luck and keep updating your journey .

But I was thinking they would get penalized for it. Cause they didn't leave when was suppose to etc.
