Anyone else still waiting 4+ years? Feeling lost about what happens if it’s denied
Guys, those of you who’ve been waiting since 2020–21, how are you feeling about the whole process? Because honestly at this point I’m afraid it’s going to be a denial. I don’t see the reason to keep us waiting so long if they can approve it. My lawyer straight up told me, “well most likely you’ll be denied, shall just go marry someone,” like he has no idea what ordeal I went through. He’s the one who helped me file when I was grieving, after a miscarriage, suicidal and now to just casually say go marry?! Obviously he is not my lawyer anymore. I don’t even know what to do if it’s denied. Am I going back to a place that doesn’t feel like home? I’ve built a community here, I’m building a life and I’m definitely not looking forward to dating or marrying just for papers. My ex was my first and only relationship and I’m still in therapy recovering. I don’t talk to men, I don’t go out, and I’m not going to marry for the sake of citizenship. Should I start preparing myself for the worst? Like get my life straight, maybe move my savings back home bank account in case I have to go? It’s been 4 years and this wait is just crushing. Just wanted to hear from people on the same page where do you all stand, how are you coping? what’s your plan if it’s a denial? like I can’t go to school with the whole waiting ordeal, and I’m getting old with no perspective. it’s just adding to my stress!

everything will be alright maybe try to listen to different lawyers opinion. you can also submit the inquiry case form and go from there dont give up! remember after covid 19 things slowed down and many cases were delayed. My friend has her green card approved since 2023 and she hasn't received the card yet and her priority date is June 2018! God will bless you with the approval just have faith and try to reach out to USCIS to see what's delaying your case.

is he an immigration lawyer? why will he tells you likes that? did he know something that you don’t know? Lawyer don’t say like that to their client, he should make a way for you to have an update. if not then ask help to the congressman or senator you need to do something and don’t just lose hope.
GOD HAVE MERCYSep 20, 2025
if I may ask have you tried to use your congressman to make enquiry on your behalf? if not, try it
d sSep 20, 2025
@Ms.Happy Sabbath :) I had a pretty intense relationship with my lawyer, he’s an old Russian guy, very straightforward. He told me that since everyone who applied around the same time as me already got approved, my case doesn’t look good. Honestly, back then he didn’t even want to work with me because I was in denial and full of doubts. When my ex pushed and basically beat me lawyer wanted me to call the police, but I was too afraid. I was in therapy, dealing with a miscarriage, grieving and a death in the family, so my psych report doesn’t tie directly to his abuse it reads more like a mix of everything I was going through. And my lawyer, he loves to remind me, like, “I told you to do this, I told you to say that.” Now he says my case will probably be denied. And of course I regret not doing the things I should have, the things that were right in front of me, but I was in denial and loveblind. I was depressed, focused on other things that felt more urgent at the time and now I just hate myself for it.

@GOD HAVE MERCY my lawyer was always against it, but now that I’ll be consulting new ones, I’ll probably do that

@tired from waitingg appreciate your input, I’m honestly happy to see your take on this. You’re right, mindset really has a lot to do with it!

Hi, @d s I had a lawyer handle my entire case before, but while waiting, I still made my own inquiries, I even wrote to the White House. Just because you have a lawyer doesn’t mean you should stop doing what you can to protect yourself too. I know the situation and everything you’ve been through and has taken a toll on you (I’m sorry about that). But it’s important to focus your energy on what you need to do now, instead of dwelling on negative thoughts about your case. As they say, if you invite negativity, it can weigh you down. So try to think positively and give it your best. I truly hope everything turns out right for you.
d sSep 20, 2025
@M dR appreciate you, that’s definitely on my agenda now. Like my therapist said, I’ve been giving control of my life to my abuse for way too long, it’s time to take action and get my life back!

@d s Be positive. it will work out for your good. You are almost there to get approved.
d sSep 20, 2025
@bridges 5 amen to that! thanks a lot!

i suggest you send unsolicited for evidence like pictures, ex spouses proof of citizenship or other. That could force them to review your case if they archived it. also contact your senator

Delay is not denial when it comes to VAWA keep healing and documenting you will be approved. Even if denied continuous healing and documenting will approve your appeal and I don’t see you getting denied.

@d s I filed my case in 2019, so it’s been 6 years. I also get the same thoughts and doubts sometimes, but the only thing we can really do is stop overthinking and wait for the results. They can’t just deny a case simply because it’s been pending for a while. A good lawyer will never tell you that. At the end of the day, most lawyers treat our cases as one among thousands, they don’t focus on one person’s situation as much as we do. That’s why it’s important to believe in yourself and trust that the results will come. These thoughts are normal, at some point, everyone going through this process feels the same way. Don’t hesitate to ask for help and stay connected with the community.

actually following the case trends, right now, they are just getting to vawa cases filed in 2021-2022. so you are not far out. also, they just don’t deny. they will send RFES FIRST. however I suggest changing your lawyer, if he has already lost hope in your case he wouldn’t be giving it his all in helping you. get a new lawyer with a fresh perspective and new ideas. not an “I told you so “ lawyer. who does that? so Petty.

I’m since 2020 and I wonder at times if this lengthy wait means my case is going to be denied. my lawyer doesn’t even communicate with me. I just sit and wait. I believe god can do it.

@d s sounds like you have a strong case for approval, you just need to document this in your personal statement and have your neighbors write statements on your behalf make sure you get the psychological evaluation make sure you see a psychiatrist who deals with vawa, they have the exact wording. sounds like your lawyer has never dealt with vawa before and they don’t trust their capabilities. if you get an RFE don’t do it with the Russian find another lawyer and have them do the RFE for you. you have very good odds of getting approved. best of luck!
